5 Types of Massage Therapy Techniques

Swedish Massage
This technique is one of the most popular and effective massage methods out there. Swedish massage targets the upper layers of muscles and uses techniques like gentle strokes, gentle muscle lifting, taps, and chopping motions to help relieve stress in the muscles. -
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep-Tissue, as opposed to the Swedish techniques, target the deeper layers of the muscle, hence the name. This technique uses deep, smooth, slow strokes to ease tension out of the deeper tissues. -
Neuromuscular Massage
Another kind of deep-tissue massage, the neuromuscular techniques are used to target trigger points that cause knots, pulled muscles, and even headaches. -
Feldenkrais
Much muscular-skeletal pain is a result of the improper movements our bodies make. Rotating the shoulder too far, twisting at the waist, and bending the back are all great examples of this. The Feldenkrais technique is used to re-educate proper movement patterns to end the aggravation of muscle-pain. -
Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral message techniques focus on the skull and upper spinal column. Extremely light pressure is used to help stimulate the muscles and fluids within the cranium and around the spinal cord to help relieve stress and headaches. -
Trager Massage
Trager massage utilizes similar but distinctly different techniques as Swedish massage. It also includes gentle shaking in an attempt to retrain the body against holding patterns that may be harmful, such as a limp from a no longer present leg injury. -
Rolfing
Rolfing techniques include a myriad of distinct off-shoot techniques that are designed to help improve posture. This very deep technique uses heavy pressure from hands, fists, and elbows to educate your muscles about proper posture. Once known as a very painful form of massage, Rolfing has developed a new group of techniques to increase comfort and effectiveness while lowering pain.

Massage has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, if you need or want a massage, you can choose from about 80 massage therapy styles with a wide variety of pressures, movements, and techniques. These all involve pressing, rubbing, or manipulating muscles and other soft tissues with hands and fingers. Sometimes, even forearms, elbows, or feet are used.
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, up to 25 percent of American adults had a massage at least once during 2016-2017. And, they have a wide range of reasons for doing so. More and more people -- especially baby boomers -- recognize the health benefits of massage. They choose from among many massage styles to get relief from symptoms or to heal injuries, to help with certain health conditions, and to promote overall wellness.
